First Light, Haleakala

A handful of plant and animal species exist only here, including, most famously, the Haleakala silversword, which blooms just once in its 20–50-year life by sending up a huge (sometimes 9-foot-long!) stalk, covered in hundreds of big, droopy, pink flowers, then lets itself die. Each one fills me with wonder, and grief.
